Literacy + Pre-Literacy

and Itzland!

“Though recommended for grade levels 3-5, The Tales of Itzland is also amazing for Pre and Early literacy learners. This is why I’ve been so eager for it to be published! I can’t wait to use The Tales with my kiddos during sessions.”

Tales that Teach!

Phonological Awareness

Through the use of inventive ‘wordplay,’ The Tales of Itzland text highlights many fundamental early literacy skills, one in particular being, phonological awareness. Phonological awareness is the ability to manipulate sounds and words; and is also essential to develop reading skills.

Joint Reading

It is important for parents and caregivers to provide opportunities that allow their child to participate in emergent literacy-language activities, such as joint book reading. These activities support the development of pre-literacy skills and aid in preventing later literacy problems.

 The PIPA Evaluation

The Pre-Reading Inventory of Phonological Awareness (PIPA) is administered to children ages 4-6 years (11 months in pre-kindergarten through first grade. The PIPA consists of six subtests:

Rhyme Awareness

The student’s ability to identify words ending in the same sound.

"She took the rose thorn and made a deep cut down her knee, And a glittery blue stream spilled out as royal as can be."

Syllable Segmentation

The student’s ability to segment sentences to words and words to syllables.

"He slowly felt himself gain muscle and become Blitz fit. As sweat poured down his brow, he willed to never quit."

Alliteration

2+ Words with the same initial sound

"Wilbi Wiz Witz came from Witzberry Wood Row, Which was the farthest spot in Ritztown an Itz could go."

Sound Segmentation

The student’s ability to segment words of different lengths into individual sounds (mat = /m/ a/ t/)

"She introduced herself as “Lollie L-O-E, like love without the V, And saw everything as the most beautiful sight she would ever see!"

Letter-Sound Knowledge

The student’s ability to say the sound that corresponds to a letter.

"She wasn’t an Average A or even a Glitzy G. She was last in the world as an Easily Forgotten Z."

Sound Isolation

The student’s ability to identify the first sound in a word

The ‘word play’ in The Tales of Itzland easily captivates children and implicitly teaches them to recognize the patterns among words. Children later use this knowledge to manipulate sounds to later build and decode words.
